In November, imports rose by 7.4% YoY, but ended a streak of consecutive monthly gains for 2023. East and Gulf Coast ports face challenges from Panama Canal issues, causing delays of up to one week. West Coast ports, however, regained dominance with 43.1% of November imports, supported by a new six-year labor contract addressing previous consistency concerns.

The year-end dip in U.S. imports and overcapacity from new ships pose a threat to container lines' 2024 profits. While rates are expected to stay stable in December, annual contracts between Asia and the United States will be crucial for determining container lines' success or losses in 2024. Short-term challenges can be managed with funds from the COVID-era boom, but long-term uncertainties exist, potentially leading to a decline in shipping/spot rates that could benefit shippers in the new year.

Challenges in Air Freight: Rate Hikes, Capacity Issues, and Weather Impact

In air freight, rates from Asia to North America surged by 7% despite a 2% volume decrease, and rates to Europe increased by 7% despite a 4% tonnage rise. WorldACD, an air freight analyst, notes that peak rates on these routes aren't demand-driven but result from constrained capacity due to weather disruptions and insufficient capacity on the China-United States leg.
