JMC Global Market Update | September 2026

As we head into the final quarter of 2026, freight markets are shifting across several modes. Here’s a quick look at what we’re watching for our clients.

OCEAN | Rates Climb Sharply

Asia-to-U.S. ocean rates have increased more than 320% since late February, bringing them close to pandemic-era highs.

  • East Coast rates are now within approximately 11% of their 2022 record high

  • Carriers are adding capacity to help meet demand

  • Additional rate pressure is possible ahead of China’s Golden Week, with some easing anticipated afterward

What it means: Timing, routing and flexibility are increasingly important as we manage international freight costs and project schedules.

AIR | Demand Remains Strong

Air freight demand continues to run above last year, with Asia-to-North America capacity remaining relatively tight.

  • Q4 demand is expected to keep pressure on available capacity

  • Fuel costs and global disruptions remain factors

  • Air continues to provide flexibility when project timelines are critical

DOMESTIC | Capacity Is Tightening

Truckload capacity is tightening as fleet growth remains limited, while elevated diesel costs are adding pressure to the market.

  • Short lead times may become more costly and volatile

  • Longer-haul lanes are seeing greater fuel-cost impact

  • Flexible pickup and delivery windows can help manage cost and availability

RAIL & INTERMODAL | An Alternative Where It Fits

Intermodal remains another option on appropriate lanes as domestic truck capacity tightens, particularly when project schedules provide additional transit flexibility.

THE JMC PERSPECTIVE

Freight markets can change quickly, but managing through those changes is what we do.

JMC Global continues to monitor capacity, routing, timing and market conditions across transportation modes to help our clients keep FF&E moving efficiently and projects on track.
