Tropical Storm Barry strengthened overnight and into Friday morning and was slowly crawling west-northwest over the Gulf of Mexico and packing sustained winds of 65 mph as government officials and residents braced for impact from the first tropical system that will make landfall in the U.S. this year. Tropical storm-force winds were already lashing parts of the Louisiana coast early Friday morning, the National Weather Service said.
