Trade Update: Temporary Tariff Reductions Begin May 14

As of May 12, 2025, the United States and China have agreed to a 90-day truce in their ongoing trade dispute. This agreement significantly reduces tariffs on imports from China — creating a key opportunity for cost savings and strategic shipping.

Current Tariff Breakdown

U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports have been reduced from a peak of 145% down to approximately 30%, broken down as:

  • 10% base duty

  • 20% fentanyl-related tariff

=Total 30%

Note:

  • Section 301 duties (25%) are still in effect

  • Section 232 duties (e.g., aluminum) may also apply depending on material type

Example: Teak Table with Aluminum Base

Now (Effective May 14):

  • 20% fentanyl tariff

  • 25% Section 301 duty

  • 10% Section 232 (aluminum) duty (typical, varies by alloy/country)

= Total: ~65% Previously:

  • 20% fentanyl

  • 25% Section 301

  • 10% Section 232

  • +120% reciprocal duty

= ~185% total

Planning Ahead: Capacity Will Tighten Quickly

Reduced tariffs are expected to spark a sharp increase in Asia–U.S. shipping demand. Understanding vessel flow and port congestion will be critical.

Latest Clarification (as of May 13)

  • Reductions take effect Wednesday, May 14, 2025

  • The 90-day pause is currently expected to run from May 10 through August 9

  • August 9 is calculated based on “entered for consumption” (arrival and clearance at U.S. Customs)
It is not based on departure date

  • This timing is subject to change if additional guidance is issued

Updated Reciprocal Duty Rule:

Entries filed after 12:01 AM on May 14, 2025:
→ Subject to 10% reciprocal duty

Entries filed prior to May 14:
→ Remain subject to the former 125% reciprocal duty

Unless clarified otherwise, the 90-day tariff window is based on Customs entry — not shipment departure.
